Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
